Favre to Minny? As if we had a choice

Favre to Minny? As if we had a choice
May 6, 2009 (Times Union (Albany, New York) delivered by Newstex ) --

Maybe its destined to to end this way, the second annual Brett Favre Retirement ``At this Time Tour, with the eternal Green Bay Packer signing with division rival Minnesota Vikings so he can get back at his old bosses.

Can you say Brett Favre may be back if he never actually leaves? (AP)

Besides, the way IRAs have tanked, who can retire now?

Right now the Vikes and Favre just talking. But given his history, his obstinence that has served him so well on the field, would anybody be surprised by Favre donning purple?

Namath as a Ram: Wrong

After his last game with the New York Jets in December, Favre sounded like he was done, and made it official in February. I wrote at the time ?I think this one sticks.

Or not. Favre certainly felt old at the end of his one season with the Jets . But after a couple of months to heal, he surely thinks theres something left in his soon-to-be 40-year-old body. And the Vikings are a perfect fit: Not only could he stick it to the Packers, but Minnesota has the appearance of a team being a quarterback away from breaking through in the NFC.

Jordan as Wizard: Wronger

Now comes the annual question: Do we want Brett back, or has Favre Fatigue become so chronic that we just want him to disappear into the depths of Mississippi?

Im on record with this: I think its the call of the great athlete to determine when they retire (as long as there is still someone seeking their services, anyway.) Still, we wince at the image of Michael Jordan as a Washington Wizard, or Babe Ruth as a Boston Brave, or Joe Namath as a Los Angeles Ram.

Ruth as a Boston Brave: Wrongest

Favre is always going to be a Packer, regardless of all those discount Jets jerseys that will make their way to Marshalls. (By the way, Minnesota already has a QB, for now, who wears the No. 4.) Should he be a Viking, one year after Minnesota pushed hard to get him. or stay retired and not risk tarnishing his legacy?

Or at this point, are we just too tired of his saga to care?
