Jared Allen diary: It was a rough Thanksgiving Day
Editor's note: Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen has agreed to provide his unique insight into his world this season for the Pioneer Press and twincities.com. In this installment, he talks about a rather forgettable Thanksgiving and his ailing shoulder. By Jared AllenMinnesota Vikings

It was kind of rough Thanksgiving.

I got sick.

I think I had a bad ice cream sandwich at the movie theater Wednesday night, when I saw Four Christmases, with Vince Vaughn. I remember when I was eating it, I was thinking, 'I think this has freezer burn. I don't think this is all that good.'

My mother, nephew and brother came in town, and I bought one of those infrared turkey fryers, so you can cook with no grease, and the wind kept blowing the flame out. We had to cook it in the oven, because the thing didn't work.

We didn't eat until like 9 o'clock at night.

But I was sick.

My body was aching. My stomach was hurting. I just laid on the ground. My nephew was playing Rock Band and I'm like, 'Turn that (expletive) down.'

My girlfriend was in Arizona, and she's like, 'Quit complaining.'

I just wanted a little compassion. So I went to bed early.

I saw part of the Detroit game, and the Dallas game, but they were terrible games. Everyone was getting throttled. I played on Thursday night (in 2006). Chiefs versus Broncos.

I had a blast. It was one of the funnest games.

It was in K.C. It was standing room only.

It worked out great. We work on Thanksgiving anyways. We had the game that night, but then you got three days off. So I liked it.

It can be tough playing on that Sunday, and getting ready. But coaches know that, and it's more mental stuff.

I feel good right now. This past game was a lot better. My shoulder was pretty beat up in that Tampa game. I didn't do the same regimen I should have done on it, and we rested it up against Jacksonville.

But I missed so many plays in that Jacksonville game. I watched film, and I had like three rushes that easily should have been sacks.

But the shoulder is getting better.
