One of the big surprises of the first day of the NFL draft was the fact that Missouri wide receiver Jeremy Maclin tumbled all the way down to the 19th pick in the first round before the Philadelphia Eagles finally selected him. Maclin had been projected by many to go much higher and the Vikings were likely surprised as any team to see Maclin falling towards them at No. 22. So were the Vikings tempted to try to go up and get the receiver?
?Maclin actually slid down from where he was projected to go, where we thought he was going to go, Vikings vice president Rick Spielman said Monday while talking to season-ticket holders on a conference call. ?The reason was when Oakland took [Darius] Heyward-Bey, most?people had him in the bottom of the first round. When they took him No. 7, that pushed all those receivers down and we did have a lot of discussion about Maclin as well. If you compare the two, Maclin was a very good Football player at Missouri. Very good receiver and return guy as well. But we made a decision when it was?getting close to us that one of those two were going to?come to us [Percy Harvin or Maclin]. Instead of giving up another draft pick, were going to sit tight and let the thing unfold.
By the way, Chip and I also shot?a draft recap video that you can watch by clicking right here. It was filmed on Monday so any references to yesterday mean Sunday. Just thought Id give you a heads up.
More number updates: The Vikings have assigned No. 73 to Jimmy Kennedy (he was No. 71) and Roderick Rogers has been switched to No. 85. Rogers, by the way,?has been moved?from safety to wide receiver.
