Minnesota Vikings Notes, Quotes 2009-02-28
--Chad O'Shea, who had been an offensive assistant with the Vikings since 2006 and recently added the duties of assistant special teams coach, has been hired as the wide receivers coach for the New England Patriots. The Vikings have lost three assistant coaches this offseason, with Paul Ferraro and Brendan Daly joining the St. Louis Rams staff. Ferraro had been the special teams coordinator and Daly was a defensive assistant.

--A June 15 trial date has been set in U.S. District Court in the case involving the NFL and Vikings defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams. The case revolves around the Williamses' use of a banned diuretic that resulted in four-game suspensions for the two Pro Bowl players. The two were granted an injunction in December, enabling them to finish the season. If upheld, the suspensions would begin next September.

The Williamses are seeking up to $10 million in damages as well as the overturning of their suspensions.

--The expected departure of offensive lineman Marcus Johnson as a free agent means the Vikings will have nothing left to show for their 2005 draft class. The Vikings had two first-round picks in that draft, including the seventh-overall selection obtained from the Raiders in the Randy Moss trade. The Vikings took wide receiver Troy Williamson with that selection and then used the 18th-overall pick on defensive end Erasmus James. Both proved to be busts.

--Coach Brad Childress said at the combine that he wants his special teams unit to gain an identity under new coordinator Brian Murphy. The Vikings gave up an NFL-record seven touchdowns on special teams last season.

"You want a special teams that's holding up their end of the bargain just like you want to know that the offense and the defense are holding up their end of the bargain and that guys put in an equal amount of importance in that special teams area," Childress said. "Identity-wise you'd like to be able to have them take the ball away occasionally."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think that Tarvaris continue to improve without a doubt, and I believe he will (continue to improve). I just expect another step in the development." -- Vikings coach Brad Childress on his expectations for quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, who from all indications will compete for the starting job with Sage Rosenfels.
