Minnesota Vikings Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-27

Minnesota Vikings Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-27
It's clear from their offseason moves, or lack thereof, that after making the playoffs this past season, Vikings executives were happy with the majority of the team's roster.

Quarterback was one area of concern for coach Brad Childress and Co. and the hope is that the addition of Sage Rosenfels can create some competition for Tarvaris Jackson.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

The Vikings made one their biggest moves of the offseason when they signed cornerback Cedric Griffin to a five-year contract extension last week. Griffin had a year left on his rookie contract. Otherwise, things have been pretty quiet at Winter Park.

The Vikings have added only two free agents from outside the organization, signing cornerback Karl Paymah and wide receiver Glenn Holt to one-year contracts. Paymah will battle for a job in the nickel defense and Holt likely will see the majority of his time on kickoff returns.

The biggest outside addition was the Vikings' trade with Houston for quarterback Sage Rosenfels. That trade cost the Vikings a fourth-round pick in this year's draft. The team still will have six picks in the draft, including two in the seventh but none in the fourth or sixth rounds.

The Vikings continue to wait and see if they will lose fullback Naufahu Tahi, who has signed a one-year, $1.4 million offer sheet with the Bengals. Tahi was not drafted out of college when he originally signed with Cincinnati - he later joined the Vikings - and thus Minnesota will get no compensation if Tahi leaves. The Vikings gave Tahi the low one-year, $1.01 million tender and had seven days from last Friday to match Cincinnati's offer.

TEAMS NEEDS

1. Right offensive tackle: Ryan Cook hasn't proven to be the answer, and versatile veteran Artis Hicks is probably best suited to serve as a backup.

2. Center: With Matt Birk having signed with Baltimore, the Vikings seem prepared to turn the job over to 2008 sixth-round pick John Sullivan. The Vikings likely want to add more depth at this position and create competition for Sullivan so he isn't handed the job.

3. Wide receiver: The Vikings have depth here with Bernard Berrian, Bobby Wade, Sidney Rice, Darius Reynaud and Aundrae Allison. But the strong run they made at T.J. Houshmandzadeh made it clear the team wants to upgrade its talent level. Free-agent addition Glenn Holt is most likely to see time on kickoff returns.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: None.

TRANSITION PLAYER: None.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--DT Kenderick Allen spent the season on injured reserve after injuring his right wrist during the Vikings' preseason opener. It would not be surprising if he does not return.

--S Michael Boulware spent the year on injured reserve after suffering a broken wrist during the preseason. Could return in a special-teams role in 2009.

--LB Napoleon Harris signed early in the regular season after middle linebacker E.J. Henderson was lost because of a foot injury. Harris, who had been let go by Kansas City before joining the Vikings, likely will be allowed to leave.

--OT Marcus Johnson, the lone remaining member of the Vikings' 2005 draft class, was a non-factor in 2008 and almost certainly won't be back.

--LB Dontarrious Thomas signed during the season to add depth after Henderson was injured. The Vikings probably won't try to bring him back.

--DT Ellis Wyms proved to be a valuable backup to 3-technique Kevin Williams. He has expressed a desire to return.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS (not tendered)

--DE Otis Grigsby (not tendered as RFA) was impressive in training camp but did little during the season.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--DT Fred Evans (tendered at $1.545M with second-round pick as compensation) was the primary backup to Pat Williams at nose tackle. Evans is considered to be an ascending player.

--FB Naufahu Tahi (tendered at $1.01M with no compensation); Bengals executed offer sheet $1.4M/1 yr with $500,000 guaranteed. Vikings have until March 27 to match.

EXCLUSIVE RIGHS FREE AGENTS: None.
