Minnesota Vikings Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-10

Minnesota Vikings Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-10
It's clear from their offseason moves, or lack thereof, that after making the playoffs this past season, Vikings executives were happy with the majority of the team's roster.

Quarterback was one area of concern for coach Brad Childress and Co. and the hope is that the addition of Sage Rosenfels can create some competition for Tarvaris Jackson.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

The Vikings retained all five of their restricted free agents, with DT Fred Evans being the last to sign his one-year, $1.545 million tender. The signing came a week after the team elected to retain FB Naufahu Tahi by matching the one-year, $1.4 million offer sheet the restricted free agent had signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Vikings have added only two free agents from outside the organization, signing cornerback Karl Paymah and wide receiver Glenn Holt to one-year contracts. Paymah will battle for a job in the nickel defense and Holt likely will see the majority of his time on kickoff returns.

The biggest addition was the Vikings' trade with Houston for Rosenfels. That trade cost the Vikings a fourth-round pick in this year's draft. The team still will have six picks in the draft, including two in the seventh but none in the fourth or sixth rounds.

TEAMS NEEDS

1. Right offensive tackle: Ryan Cook hasn't proven to be the answer, and versatile veteran Artis Hicks is probably best suited to serve as a backup.

2. Center: With Matt Birk having signed with Baltimore, the Vikings seem prepared to turn the job over to 2008 sixth-round pick John Sullivan. The Vikings likely want to add more depth at this position and create competition for Sullivan so he isn't handed the job.

3. Wide receiver: The Vikings have depth here with Bernard Berrian, Bobby Wade, Sidney Rice, Darius Reynaud and Aundrae Allison. But the strong run they made at T.J. Houshmandzadeh made it clear the team wants to upgrade its talent level. Free-agent addition Glenn Holt is most likely to see time on kickoff returns.

MEDICAL WATCH: Cornerback Charles Gordon (left ankle), right guard Anthony Herrera (shoulder) and right tackle Artis Hicks (triceps) are among the players who are expected to be limited when the Vikings begin Organized Team Activities in May. Pro Bowl nose tackle Pat Williams also had minor offseason surgery on his knee but it's not clear if that will slow him.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: None.

TRANSITION PLAYER: None.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--DT Kenderick Allen spent the season on injured reserve after injuring his right wrist during the Vikings' preseason opener. It would not be surprising if he does not return.

--S Michael Boulware spent the year on injured reserve after suffering a broken wrist during the preseason. Could return in a special-teams role in 2009.

--LB Napoleon Harris signed early in the regular season after middle linebacker E.J. Henderson was lost because of a foot injury. Harris, who had been let go by Kansas City before joining the Vikings, likely will be allowed to leave.

--LB Dontarrious Thomas signed during the season to add depth after Henderson was injured. The Vikings probably won't try to bring him back.

--DT Ellis Wyms proved to be a valuable backup to 3-technique Kevin Williams. He has expressed a desire to return.
