The injury kept him out of Saturday's exhibition game at Baltimore. After Tuesday's practice, Berrian said his condition is "a day to day thing" and that he's not sure whether he'll play Saturday against Pittsburgh.

"We're trying to wait and see and make sure everything's right before we get to the season," said Berrian, who signed a six-year contract with $16 million guaranteed to be Minnesota's top receiver after four years with Chicago.

For a player paid to stretch the defense down the field and catch long passes, an injury that affects running ability is certainly a concern. Though Berrian appeared in all 16 games for the Bears, he had the same problem last season.

"Hopefully, if I get enough rest before it really gets as serious as it did last year, then I'll be good by the season," Berrian said.

Coach Brad Childress downplayed the situation.

"It's tender, so he's mixing the treatment with the football and doing what he can do. But that's a number of our guys, trying to work through," Childress said.

Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has a sprained right knee and is wearing a custom-made brace in practice, but he didn't take part in team drills on Tuesday. Wide receiver Sidney Rice was held out on a hot day because of dehydration because of a virus. Defensive end Brian Robison has increased his participation following surgery to repair a varicose vein in his left leg.
